You love me so much! You are constantly so kind! PSALM 86:13 TLB

There are so many Scriptures that talk about God’s love for us. It’s a truth we’re often told as a child, and we carry it with us as we grow. As we mature, we begin to realize the depth of what God has given us and all that His love motivated Him to do for us. First and foremost, the sacrifice of His only Son, which threw open the doors of heaven. The separation was dissolved, the gap was closed, and the bridge to the throne room was rebuilt. Through Jesus, we received a standing invitation to confidently approach the throne of God’s grace to find mercy and help in our time of need. We may never fully grasp the eternal benefits of His great love in our lifetime, but I believe our hearts and minds will be filled with the revelation when we see Him face to face—and it’s likely we won’t be able to stand in the moment.

One of the beautiful things about God’s word is that love and kindness are often mentioned in the same verse when speaking of our Father’s goodness. Kindness calls to mind so much more: compassion, tenderness, warmth, graciousness, generosity, forgiveness, patience, sympathy. To think that our Father is kind makes His love feel more tangible. Kindness is love in action, so to speak, and it’s something we should remind ourselves of at those times when something surprising, yet needed, happens. A letter from a friend arrives on a down day, a front row parking spot opens up when we’re frustrated and tired, or someone offers the right words at just the right time. We all have these little “kindnesses” in our days, but I wonder how many times they direct our hearts and minds to the One who puts them in motion? Our Father is kind—all the time. He’s not moody, nor is He fickle. He is good. He is attentive. He is love and kindness in its highest form.

My father-in-law is a war veteran who recently took part in a funeral for a fellow WWII veteran. Although it’s a general practice to have a canopy at the gravesite, this gentleman asked that there not be one at his funeral. He told his family and friends that he wanted the sun to shine down upon him. The day of his funeral was bitterly cold, and it was cloudy and snowing throughout. When they arrived at the cemetery and began to say the Lord’s Prayer, the clouds opened up and the sun shined down in all its warmth and glory. For those who were aware of this man’s request, it was an emotional moment—and a testimony to the gentle kindness of our loving God.
