The Power of the Acorn

When we bought our 100-year-old house here in Siloam Springs, it came with some even older trees. We quickly found out that the five oak trees we have in our front yard produce lots of acorns! The Lord used all of those acorns to teach me an important lesson.

Life is made up of many little moments and those are the “acorns” in our days. God has generously provided many of them for us.

If we scoop a hole in the ground, drop an acorn in, and cover it up, then the acorn can grow. That is the equivalent to “obeying the Spirit” when He leads us in a small moment of the day. In that moment, the power of the acorn begins and the chain reaction God orchestrates from that moment on can be stunning. Life happens!

However, if we choose not to obey and ignore the Spirit, then the acorn can be crushed by people walking on it above the ground. Or the squirrels can take and eat the acorn. These things happen when we are living in the flesh and trying to please ourselves or when we allow the enemy to take what God has given us.

On the first day of Jesus’ ministry, He was given the scroll of Isaiah and asked to read. He chose chapter 61 because it announced what He came to do. At the end of those verses, the conclusion is:

“That they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

We may not see anything right after the acorn is dropped into the ground. But if we come back in ten years, we will behold the power of the acorn—a strong, towering oak tree!

Let us obey the Spirit in the “little moments.” Like the oak trees in our yard, God can grow what we begin today into blessings that last a lifetime and beyond.
