Don’t, don’t be afraid. Haven’t I proclaimed from ages past that I would save you? You are my witnesses—is there any other God? No! None that I know about! There is no other Rock! ISAIAH 44:8 TLB

What kind of picture do you draw in your mind when you think of God as our Rock? I see the one rising majestically out of a stormy sea, the bluff pitched high above the noisy, rushing waters below, the flat rock that offers sure footing in a pool of life-swallowing mud. Through the years I’ve learned some rock-standing skills, after, of course, sliding off plenty of times. Circumstances have caused me to lose sight of the One who always provides a solid place to stand when everything else is shaking apart.

Within a single year, we were faced with two major crises in our family. I let the shock of it all blast me off the Rock beneath me. Instead of turning to God and hanging on for dear life, I cried, whined, and screamed my way into the sea that was raging around me. Blame, point, pity, you name it—I was flailing—and I slipped into the depths.

As I was driving to my daughter’s apartment to talk with her, God threw out a lifeline. I stopped at a red light and looked up at the street sign: Grace Blvd. My heartache gave way to tears. My daughter needed grace in this moment. Somehow, I had to muster the strength to climb back onto the Rock, wipe the water off my face, and show her the perfect love and mercy that God had extended to me countless times when I was drowning in the unpredictable currents of life.

The enemy of our souls is going to kick up the wind every chance he gets to keep us from standing on our faith. So the next time you feel yourself “slipping,” close your eyes, open your arms, and allow God to steady you. He’s the Rock and the stability we need to keep our feet planted firmly—allowing our spirits and our faith to soar.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. PSALM 40:2 NIV
