From Generation to Generation

We will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,
His power, and the wonders He has done.
PSALM 78:4 NIV

This Father’s Day is especially meaningful to me. I am the father of two married daughters and a teenage son. They are each incredible blessings in my life. This year I am also a new “Poppa” as I have a new granddaughter. Finally, this is also the first Father’s Day without my dad. As I’ve become the new “patriarch” of our family, I am learning more about the “circle of life” and the importance of passing on a godly heritage to the next generation.

My dad taught me many things. He taught me to be a hard worker, to be kind and loving to others, and to be a giver. He taught me to laugh and to make others laugh. There were some things, though, that I never did learn. My dad was the world’s greatest gardener. You’d think I could grow a simple tomato plant, but mine never do grow like his did! The greatest lesson my dad ever taught me, though, was the great love God showed to us by sending His Son Jesus. This faith in the Lord has carried me through every joy and every adversity of life. It also gives me an incredible peace now that I will see my dad again!

So I have a great heritage that I need to pass on. The verse above is a great reminder that we must be intentional about passing on the good news to the next generation. Whether the Lord gives me 70, 80, or 90 trips around the sun, it will never be enough time with my children. I’ve got to make sure that our relationship is an eternal one. I must tell them “the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.”

For all of you dads out there, I pray you have a wonderful Father’s Day and remember it’s our job to “pass it on!” For all of you who will be honoring your dads this Father’s Day, I would encourage you to treasure every day you have with them.
