For You created my inmost being;
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Psalm 139:13-14 NIV
In a few months, my daughter will be born. Even though I feel her little kicks already, I can hardly believe that soon she’ll be out here in the world, looking up at me. I imagine at some point her eyes will have that curious “who-am-I-and-what-am-I-doing-here?” look in them.
As she grows, she’ll naturally start to wonder about the purpose of her life. The good news is, it’s not my job to tell her, but there is Someone who can—Someone who had the idea of her long before my husband and I did. It’s our awesome Creator, who loved her into existence and who has plans and dreams for her that we can’t even imagine yet.
The purpose of all of mankind is to love God and enjoy Him forever. But it’s such a joy to know God created each of our lives with specific purposes for His glory. At some point, we were each “knit together in our mother’s womb,” created with unique gifts and personalities and more purposes than we can imagine. And the beautiful thing is those gifts and purposes never run out. Whether we are 9 months, 9 years, or 99 years, God desires to fill our days with meaning.
When I lose sight of this truth, life starts to feel mundane and meaningless. What I need most in those times is to ask God to remind me of how valuable I am to Him—to refresh me with a renewed sense of His purpose for me. Then, each day He gives me on the earth can be a day lived with joy and meaning. Whether it’s work, play, rest, or prayer, it matters because it is a gift from Him.
And just like I can’t tell my daughter what the purpose of her life will be, no one can tell you or me what our purpose is. It is something we can discover daily as we draw close to God and listen to His heart. We can ask Him, “Lord, what do You have for me today? How are You calling me to live and to love?”
Let’s ask Him today and allow Him to fill our lives with the joy of knowing how valuable we are.
