Time is a funny thing. When I’m playing with my grandchildren, working in my garden, or rushing to the airport, it passes faster than I’d like. Once I arrive at the airport and I’m waiting for the departure of a delayed flight it goes from flying to creeping.
The pace of time never fluctuates yet our perception of it is ever-changing. When we’re in the midst of enjoyable activities or simply the busyness of our daily lives, the ticking clock either pushes us along or moves ahead with little notice. Before we know it our day is spent. However, when our circumstances become stressful and trying we are often pulled into an anxious state that transforms time into a heaviness for our hearts. We instinctively want the power to speed up our ‘walk through the fire’—the very thing God is using to refine us.
Our perception of God during our times of trial may change as well: He is distant, He has forgotten me, He does not see my suffering. But just as it is impossible to alter the pace of time, it is impossible to change the character of God. He does not change. There is no shadow of turning in Him. In other words, He doesn’t even think about leaving us alone, even when it might have been our own disobedience that put us on a difficult path.
Time may seem to close in on us when we’re hurting, lonely, or pushed to our limits, but we can be certain that God has His hand on the stopwatch. He will not give us more than we can bear or leave us in the fire one second too long. His desire is for us to come forth as gold—to shine in the lives of those who need to know that He is with them today, right now, in their moment of need. And in the end, there is nothing more worthy of our time.
