Safely in the Arms of Faith

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me. JOHN 14:1 NIV

I was boarding a connecting flight from Dallas to Tulsa following a trip to the west coast. Because of a negative experience I once had on a small prop plane, I was uneasy about the next hour of my life. After being seated, I noticed a young boy across the aisle from me who was traveling alone. I guessed him to be around ten years old. It was a stormy, blustery afternoon, so I knew our flight would be anything but smooth. Shortly after takeoff the bumping began. I laid my head back, closed my eyes and tried to relax. The turbulence continued, shaking the plane from side to side with an occasional sensation of dropping. I wondered how the little boy was doing. I opened my eyes and looked over to see his head tilted to one side, realizing immediately that he was sound asleep! “Wow!” I thought, “He must feel completely safe in the hands of this pilot!” The thought occurred to me without pause—if he is able to trust so deeply in someone he can’t see, in the midst of a situation that is totally out of his control, how much more should I trust the Pilot of my soul?

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” MATTHEW 18:3 NIV. While I allowed my heart to be fearful and unsettled, just across the aisle God had given me a picture of the beautiful contrast: a child’s trusting heart resting soundly in the arms of faith. God used that little boy to show me the peace that was always available to me—it was simply a matter of trust.

Thought of the Day
In every situation there is an opportunity to trust God.

Prayer
Father, help me to have a trusting, peaceful heart today, and rest soundly in Your faithful care.
